Four Mpumalanga Cops Nailed for Trying to Hijack Cannabis Seizure

Four Mpumalanga police officers have been charged after trying to sell cannabis seized in a vehicle at a guest house in Carolina. They were arrested by their SAPS colleagues after trying to exchange part of the haul for cash at a second-hand car dealership.

Four police officers have been arrested and charged with theft, corruption, and defeating the ends of justice in Mpumalanga. The police, including a sergeant, found themselves on the wrong side of the law after allegedly trying to cash in on a suspected drug bust.

What happened during the bust?

According to IOL, the group reportedly acted on a tip-off about a vehicle parked at a guesthouse in Carolina, believed to be ‘loaded with dagga’. When they searched the white Toyota Fortuner, they reportedly found bags of cannabis inside. But instead of booking the vehicle and its contents into evidence, things took a different turn.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo, the officers allegedly called in a tow truck and diverted some of the illicit cannabis to a local second-hand dealership, where it was exchanged for cash. The scheme didn’t last long. Investigators picked up on what had happened, leading to the arrest of all four officers, aged between 24 and 43 years.

The accused appeared before the Carolina Magistrate’s Court, where each was granted bail of R5,000. The matter has been postponed to 20 May 2026 and classified as a Schedule 5 offence.

Acting provincial police commissioner Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi strongly criticised the officers behaviour, warning that corruption within the ranks will not be tolerated.

“We cannot have criminals within our ranks who hide behind the badge,” he said. “Those who undermine our efforts to combat crime must be exposed, arrested, and held accountable.”

In other cannabis arrest news in Mpumalanga: R5 million Bust in Nelspruit CBD

Police apprehended a 29-year-old man carrying almost a ton of illicit cannabis in the Mbombela (Nelspruit) CBD on Friday, 27 March 2026. According to EWN, the suspect was apprehended during a joint operation by SAPS and local law enforcement. The man was stopped and his Toyota Quantum searched by officers who discovered 25 compressed bags of dagga weighing just under 900 kilograms, and with an estimated street value of R5 million.

In addition to the cannabis, police seized more than R3,000 in cash and confiscated the vehicle used to transport the illicit cargo. Speaking on behalf of the Mpumalanga police, Captain Mpho Nonyane confirmed that “the suspect is facing charges of possession and dealing in dagga” and the matter is being dealt with by the Nelspruit Magisrates Court.
