Two Former SA Professional Footballers Arrested in Zimbabwe on Cannabis Trafficking Charges

Two former prominent South African professional footballers have been arrested in Zimbabwe with 750 kg of cannabis. Brian Amidu and Rueben Muhlanga have been remanded in custody while police investigate whether they are part of a larger drug trafficking syndicate.

Brian Abbas Amidu, a former Kaizer Chiefs and Black Leopards forward, and Reuben ‘Kudzai’ Muhlanga, who played for Dynamo FC, (pictured here) have been arrested in Zimbabwe allegedly is possession of cannabis with a street value of R1,2 million.

They are accused of being part of a broader drug dealing syndicate in the country and have been remanded in custody,

According to IOL News, South African citizens, Amidu (age given as 29), also known as Tumai Matsika, and Mhlanga (41) were arrested by Zimbabwean detectives near Kwekwe. A Zimbabwean police statement said that the two were ‘intercepted’ after a tip-off.

The statement says the two former professional footballers “were found in possession of 750 kg of dagga, valued at US$75,000.00 (approximately R1,288,796), in a silver Honda Shuttle vehicle (registration number AGP 6776) along the Kwekwe–Kadoma Highway on 03/10/25.”

Police say they are suspected to be part of a larger drug trafficking syndicate operating across several provinces in Zimbabwe.

The Herald newspaper in Zimbabwe reported that prosecutors described the bust as one of the largest in the Midlands Province this year.

IOL reports that the arrest has reignited debate around Amidu’s age, with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) recording him as 29, while football databases such as FotMob and Transfermarkt list his birth year as 1990, which would make him 35.

Amidu’s football career included a brief stint with Kaizer Chiefs in 2012 before moving to Black Leopards in South Africa. He later played in Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, and represented CAPS United and the Zimbabwe national team, the Warriors.
