Hijab-Wearing Edibles Shoplifters Target Cape Town Store, Clip Goes Viral

SAPS says shoplifting is theft even if it’s from an unlicensed cannabis business and the goods theoretically were not for sale. This follows an incident in Cape Town where five people were caught on CCTV stealing edibles from Joy’s Medical Cannabis Store.

IOL reports that the CCTV footage of what seems like a carefully-co-ordinated shoplifting scam at Joys Medical Cannabis in Lower Main Rd, Cape Town, has gone viral.

Joys has a reputation for a wide range of high quality cannabis edibles.

On the minute-long clip, five people enter the store, and in what seems to be a deliberate distraction move, two men engage the cashier elsewhere in the shop while three women, two wearing hijabs, browse the edibles displays. They appear to unaware of the camera which catches them slipping several items into a bag, before they join up with the men and casually walk out the shop.

Joys has not laid any charges, but SAPS spokesman Wesley Twigg says they are welcome to. Twigg said: “Cape Town Central police are aware of the video circulating on social media, however no criminal case was registered for investigation.”

He encouraged the affected persons to visit their nearest police station to formally register a criminal complaint so that an investigation can proceed.

The clip of the incident, in which the shoplifters can be clearly identified, has received thousands of views since the incident happened
