Police in Mpumulanga have seized 1,6 tons of illegal cannabis in the last week in the area between White River and Louw’s Creek near the eSwatini border. IOL reports that the two seizures appear to be part of a wider distribution network in the area.
A routine police patrol near Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport turned into a major drug bust when officers intercepted a vehicle carrying over a ton of dagga, leading to the arrest of two suspects and the seizure of cannabis worth an estimated R1.2 million.
The arrests took place on 27 January 2025 on the R538 Road following a routine patrol by officers from the White River Flying Squad Unit.
The vehicle was stopped by the members, and they conducted a search. It was during this time when they discovered 50 compressed bags of dagga," said police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane.
"The dagga weighed approximately 1,020 kg/"
Two men were arrested on 19 January 2025 during a routine stop-and-search operation in which their Hyandai bakkie was allegedly found with 644 kg of illegal cannabis Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane confirmed that the dagga weighed approximately 644.14 kg and has an estimated street value of about R2.4 million.
"The investigation thus indicates that the suspects were from Louville near Low's Creek and were enroute to Matsulu when they were intercepted by the police," said Ndubane.
Authorities believe this was part of a larger drug distribution network operating in the region.
