Kenya has been a slow starter in the African cannabis space, but now the East African country is taking a leaf from Malawi, Rwanda, Zimbabwe and South Africa and is preparing to develop a sustainable hemp sector.

It wants to create innovative products and applications that could transform industries, from agriculture to manufacturing and has called for a regional conference at the end of this month.

The Kenya Hemp Conference (KeHeCon 2025) hopes to bring together industry leaders, researchers, policymakers, and other stakeholders to gain insights into international trade opportunities and understand the environmental benefits of industrial hemp.

KeheCon 2025 is a landmark networking event that aims to establish a foundation for an industrial cannabis sector. The event is being held at Nairobi’s Villa Rosakempinski Hotel on 20 January 2025. Keynote speaker will be Patrick Atagi (CEO of the National Industrial Hemp Council of America) who will be speaking on international marketing opportunities for Kenya. Other speakers among the international and African guests are Justina Wamae (pictured above) (Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology), Dr Zorodzai Maroveke (Zimbabwe Industrial Hemp Trust), Dr Lusike Wasilwa (Director Industrial Crops for Karlo) and Olufemi Ajayi (Alabama State University - Industrial Hemp & Specialty Crops Program).

Kehecon 2025 organizers say they want to unlock the “immense potential” of industrial cannabis in East Africa through a mix of:

  • Knowledge Sharing – Gain insights from global leaders and local pioneers.

  • Networking Opportunities – Connect with industry trailblazers, policy makers, and investors.

  • Policy Development – Collaborate on frameworks to propel the industry forward.

  • Market Exploration – Discover untapped opportunities in the booming hemp market.
